History a crystal company was originally founded in the city in 1783 by George and William Penrose; it produces very fine crystal that became world renowned. However, later, their company closed, allegedly due to excessive taxation of the product. In 1947, Czech immigrant Charles Bacik established a glassworks in the city because of the excellent reputation of the original glass. Helped by his countryman and designer Miroslav Havel, the company started its business in a depressed Ireland. In the early 1950s, he was picked as a subsidiary of Irish glass bottle.

Waterford Crystal Limited is currently a member of Waterford Wedgwood plc, formed through the acquisition by the former Waterford Glass Group of the famous pottery manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood in 1986. His Cheairmam is Sir Anthony O'Reilly and CEO is John Foley.

In May 2005, Waterford Wedgwood announced the closure of its factory in Dungarvan to consolidate all operations in the main factory in Kilbarry, Waterford City, where 1,000 people are employed by the company. The move has caused nearly 500 Dungarvan workers losing their jobs. The Kilbarry operation features a tourist resort offering guided tours of the factory, gift shop, a cafe and gallery.

Products: Waterford produced many models of glasses of lead crystal, including Adare, Alana, Colleen, Kincora, Lismore, Maeve, Tramore, and several others. Waterford chandeliers hanging in well-known buildings such as Windsor Castle, Westminster Abbey and the Kennedy Center, and they made the crystals from the famous New Year's Eve New Year which fell each year in Times Square in New York. Also designed by Waterford are the Masters Series trophies crystal shield is awarded to the winner of each tournament in professional tennis nine Masters Series men.
